First of all, its important to know in which style are you skiing. Rollerskis are available for skating and classic step, and there are also combinations of variants that can be used for skiing in both steps.
Classic style skates have a longer frame, smaller and wider wheels, and one of the wheels ( more commonly in the front ) is usually equipped with a ratchet that prevents rollerskis from rolling back.
Combi variant, the frame can either be from a skating or classic step. Depending on which step is most often used. Wheels are also fitted in such a way that they can ski in both steps.
For training or competition?
Rollerskis are different by use. There are models that are more suitable for the race and models that are more suitable for training.
More of the difference is felt directly in Skating style. Rollerskis are usually made of lightweight aluminum frame and very fast wheels. These rollerskis can also be used for training with slower wheels. Rollerskis for training do not only differ from the wheels. There are manufacturers who produce special rollerskis for training. The frames of these models are made of materials, whos characteristics help the athlete feel like he is on a cross-country skis. These models are unsuitable for competitions because they are too flexible and they can not reach the maximal speed. Exceptions are the Globulonero B1 Carbon Skate and the CS1 Carbon Classic models that are robust enough and, which can be fitted with faster wheels, also for competitions.
If rollerskis are mostly used for training, then we would recommend using models that are similar to skiing with winter skis – cross-country. The feeling of rollerskis with these models are much more enjoyable.
Beginner or profesional?
If you are a beginner, it is better to choose models that provide more stability. In the classic step, there are no significant differences between models in terms of stability, but for beginners, it’s better to choose models with smaller and wider wheels.
On asphalt or another relief?
Rollerskis are also being manufactured, which can be used on a gravel roads and forest tracks. These models have larger wheels than those that are used on asphalt and they are pumpable.
What else do you need to be able to rollerski?
The roller-skier equipment includes rollerskis, boots, bindings (SNS or NNN), poles, helmet, gloves and guards, if needed.
The boots can be used the same as the ones you use in the winter, but there are also special summer models that are suitable for the warm season.
The poles can also be from winter equipment, but you will need to replace the ends of the poles, that are suitable for roller skiing, which are smaller and have a very abrasion resistant tip.
The helmet will be required for your own safety, just like riding a bike.
Gloves (preferably longer) are needed to protect hands and fingers in case of a fall.
For beginners, we also recommend using a knee and elbow guards to prevent unpleasant abrasions when it comes to falling.
